The music was written entirely by guitarists Infernus and Tormentor. It differs from other Gorgoroth albums because it includes elements of industrial music, usage of keyboards, and much more melody than other releases. Incipit Satan was also the first album to mark Gaahl as full-time vocalist and King ov Hell as bassist. The band members dedicated the album to their deceased friend and former bandmate Grim.
Lyrics by Infernus (Tracks 2, 4, 5 and 8) and Gaahl (Tracks 1 and 6). Lyrics on Track 3 taken from a Norwegian translation of the poem Les Litanies de Satan from Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal. Music by Infernus (tracks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8) and Tormentor (tracks 1, 2 and 6). Track 7 created in studio by Gaahl, Daimonion and King ov Hell. Vocal arrangements by Gaahl, except on Tracks 5 and 8.
