ᴍᴀɴʏ ᴘɪᴇᴄᴇs ᴏғ ɢᴏᴏᴅ ʟᴜᴄᴋ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʜᴀᴘᴘᴇɴᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ᴛʜɪs production, but one, which I regard as most fortunate, was Howard Shore agreeing to compose the score for ᴛʜᴇ ʟᴏʀᴅ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ʀɪɴɢs. ❡ Howard has embraced the diversity of the world of the film, giving life to the cultures of Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits and Men in a shimmering symphony of immense beauty and power. ❡ I could not be more pleased with the score for the The Fellowship Of The Ring. Howard’s great strength as a composer is his ability to capture the emotional truth and beauty of J.R.R. ɪ ᴄᴏᴜʟᴅ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴀᴘᴘʀᴏᴀᴄʜᴇᴅ ᴀ ᴡᴏʀᴋ ᴏғ ᴛʜɪs sᴄᴏᴘᴇ without great collaborations. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have led me on this journey through Middle Earth. They lit the dark corners of Tolkien’s world and revealed to me its secrets and mythology. Whether in the bright sunlight and snow of Caradhras or the pitch black of Moria, I was able to follow their path. ❡ At times I must admit I felt like Frodo with the burden of The Ring in my vest pocket, but page by page, then note by note I was able to uncover Tolkien’s complex world. ❡ Special thanks to Philippa Boyens who created so many of the lyrics and authored poems for the film that were translated into Elvish, Dwarvish, Black Speech and Adunaic. ❡ The major groundwork for this piece was done in New Zealand. Inspired by its natural beauty and encouraged by the wonderfully enthusiastic New Zealand Symphony, I set off on my journey.
