When did I defend Merle Mason lmao. His lyrics are hilarious aside from a couple songs.

I thought it would have been self-evident that people who listen to "real emo" are nerds

I had no idea these guys have gotten so much more popular nowadays. I guess since everybody uses Spotify and shit now that makes sense. They deserve the recognition.

Genuinely don't know why these guys are so lauded among emo fans. Not that they're bad, but they're just kinda average. Where's this attention when it comes to Shotmaker? Hoover? Sleepytime Trio?

While I agree that their legacy is principally due to Angry Son's existence, they were in total just much better songwriters than those groups. Sleepytime Trio and Hoover have interesting ideas, but their songs are not as compelling and not particularly memorable individually. Shotmaker were ahead of these two, but Indian Summer really had that "Nirvana quality" so to speak. Listen to the live version of Sugar Pill from Hidden Arithmetic for instance - none of those bands ever wrote anything equivalent imo.

For real. In fact listen to the entirety of Hidden Arithmetic. It's better than Giving Birth to Thunder. I just wish Numero would finally release Hidden Arithmetic on Spotify

Excellent use of quiet/loud dynamics, dissonant but accessible riffs, early recognition for the emo jazz sample trope, live performances were often improvised, dominant bass, had this early myth that they were all broke dope heads (should be irrelevant, but people still holds jeromes dream to the JEFF SMITHERSONS PASSED OUT IN A VOCAL BOOTH meme) and yeah, angry son, but I always thought Aren't You Angel defined them and their corner of the genre 100x more. You know I love those bands you mentioned, but they were never cut out for "mainstream'" emo success, what ever that might mean. Also, back in the days of early emo resurgence on YouTube Hoover was held just as high as Indian Summer was, I just think in the long run Hoover's music is more advanced and has less of that in your face emotional execution that indian summer had which left Hoover in the dust.

I agree, they were the masters of tone. Add and Subtract is one of my favorite emo songs ever.

Just have listened to debut's opener. Seems that i found another good old-school heavy-prog band.

I was surprised to see a comment related to the prog band, lol. Wish there was more crossover of people that listen to both the emo band and the prog band. The prog band only has that one album, but fucking hell it's so good.

they're such an interesting band. hadn't listened to them for a couple of years and keep coming back after the first re-listen, not just because I *like* the songs (obviously) but also because I get this feeling that I can't quite wrap my head around them. it's not the "complexity" as such, there are way more technically "complex" bands out there, but there's something about Indian Summer that's fairly unique though I can't pinpoint it.
