JILUKA is a Japanese visual kei /metal band formed in May 2013 and known for blending modern metal with visual kei aesthetics. The band is signed to the independent label DPR Japan and consists of vocalist Ricko (formerly known as Kanata), guitarist Sena (the main songwriter), bassist Boogie, and drummer Zyean. Jiluka's music can be described as a fusion of modern metal and visual kei.
The original lineup, which included drummer JaiL, debuted on May 6, 2013. However, JaiL left the band in October 2013, leading to a temporary hiatus. In 2015, Jiluka resumed activities with new drummer Zyean and Ricko adopting his current stage name. Their return was marked by the release of the debut single "Screamer" and the EP Brave Agonistic Letters Under Segregation in April of that year.
In 2016, Jiluka held their first solo concert, "Zion OF NEXT EPIC," and released the singles "Faizh" and "Lluvia." The following year, they released their third EP, Xenomorphic, and a limited single titled "Hellraiser" in 2018. That year also saw the release of their first full-length album, Metamorphose, which reached number eight on the Oricon Indies Albums chart. The band gained further recognition by performing at events like Metal Square vol. 4 alongside other well-known visual kei bands such as DIMLIM and Nocturnal Bloodlust.
In 2019, Jiluka organized the Mad Pit Tour, performing with bands like Deviloof and DEXCORE. They also released a cover album, Polyhedron, and collaborated with the band breakin' holiday for a joint release, B'H⇄JLK. Their continued success earned them a spot as the 12th-ranked artist on JRock News's list of top visual kei and Japanese rock artists of 2019.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Jiluka remained active, celebrating their 5th anniversary with a performance at Tsutaya-O West and releasing the EP Xtopia. They also toured with Leetspeak Monsters, albeit with limitations due to the pandemic. In 2021, they performed a free online concert available worldwide via Twitch, hosted by Chaotic Harmony. Later that year, they announced the release of their album Idola.
In 2022, Jiluka released the digital single "Blvck," produced by Jeff Dunne, and embarked on another iteration of the Mad Pit Tour. The band members also took part in various side projects and collaborations, with drummer Zyean supporting Cazqui's Brutal Orchestra and Sena and Boogie modeling for Mana’s brand Moi-même-Moitié.
In 2023, Jiluka participated in the Dex Fest 2023 festival in Nagoya and released the singles "Overkill" and "Venom." They made their U.S. debut at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2023 and soon after performed at the Evil Live Festival in Lisbon, becoming the first visual kei band to perform in Portugal. This marked the start of their first world tour, K4RMA, which included sold-out shows in Europe and performances at the Resurrection Festival in Spain and in Los Angeles. They also announced plans to return to Europe in 2024.
Each member had a different starting point in their musical careers. Ricko originally played guitar but transitioned to vocals due to a lack of vocalists in his previous band. Sena initially played drums before switching to guitar. Zyean, who started as a self-taught vocalist and guitarist, became a drummer at the encouragement of a classmate. Boogie also switched to bass when a bassist was needed in his previous band.
Jiluka draws inspiration from a range of musical influences. All members cite X Japan as a major influence. Sena, the band's primary songwriter, also mentions the band Kansas, classical music, and Rixton as influences. Ricko is influenced by rap and rock, being a fan of Linkin Park and L'Arc-en-Ciel. Boogie listens to a variety of genres, but credits Slipknot for introducing him to metal. Zyean's musical background is rooted in metal, with influences ranging from Metallica to Behemoth.
