Biography

James E. Cunningham Ph.D. is an ethnomusicologist and assistant professor in the Department of Music at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. He began playing the didgeridoo in 1989 as a student of world-renowned trombonist Stuart Dempster.

That mentorship resulted in the formation of the Dideri Dudes with fellow student Brian Pertl and the release of two experimental multi-didgeridoo albums. Didgeridoo.diversions is the first solo album for James E. Cunningham. It consists of original experimental compositions/arrangements for solo didgeridoo, as well as duets for didgeridoo with saxophones, double bass, and the sounds of nature. Many of the tracks employ a melodic approach to an instrument often considered to produce only a drone or rhythmic accompaniment. A single track "The Hamburger Song" is a vocal composition that utilizes Tuvan kargyraa and höömei throat-singing techniques.
