Biography
In 1958 Jeff Myers was born in Austin, Texas and, from there, raised in the USA. He has lived in Dallas, and Houston, Detroit, Atlanta, and Nashville just to name a few. His love of music has been since his birth, watching intently, at the age of 2, as his father would mash out tunes on his Sears organ in Austin crying while his father played "Silent Night". In Dallas, age 6, at his grandmother's house, he wanted to listen to records while everyone else wanted to watch TV. During this time, he would come home from school (Obadiah Knight Elementary) and plunk out the melodies of the songs he had learned at school on his granmother's piano. Not long after, Jeff ,and his older brother James, were whisked away to Detroit by his father after his parents parted ways. While in Detroit, he received his first guitar, at the age of 8, as a Christmas present. Not much came of this as he was never afforded any lessons; but his fascination with music remained strong; absorbing the likes of The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Dave Clark Five, and the artists of the Motown Sound.
It would not be until he went to live with his mother in Atlanta that Jeff would actually begin to learn his instrument. At the age of 14, he began to study the guitar after his mother, who was attending a guitar class at Clayton Junior College, in Clayton County Georgia, eventually gave up the instrument herself. With dogged determination, he set out to "play this thing if it kills me". After a 6 month, self disciplined, course of study in chord changes, Jeff began to tackle the songs of the Beatles. From there his talent began to grow. At the age of 16, he began to learn the Bass guitar out of neccessity for his High School Jazz Band, and a group he formed with a couple of his classmates. The only gig that would come as a result of this grouping was at Lion Country Safari in Henry County, Ga.
After 4 years in the Navy (1976-1980), Jeff returned to Atlanta to begin seeking out a band. In 1982 he joined forces with Keith Lawson (Vocals), Robert Agosto (Drums), and an unknown bass player to record an album. The album was never released to the public. In 1983, Jeff became a Christian and started writing Christian songs; some of the songs he wrote during that period are part of his album "Of Good and Evil".
From Atlanta, Jeff was encouraged to move to Nashville by Robert Agosto in the hopes of reuniting with his favorite drummer to continue working together on music projects. This would never materialize as Robert lived in Clarksville, Tn. some 60 miles NW of Nashville. During his stay in Nashville, Jeff entered and received an Associates Degree in Electronics from ITT Technical Inst., met his first wife, had a son, got divorced and ultimately met Denise his present wife. While courting Denise, Jeff was involved in a three piece band called "Court Jester" with John (last name unknown) on Bass and Vocal, and a Drummer named "Blaze". They began recording an album with songs as "Rock As You Please", and "Gone Fishin'". One of their songs (title name lost) was played on a local radio show promoting local bands one evening in 1993. They also played a gig that was put together by the radio station to promote the bands that had aired.
After marrying Denise and losing his job from the now defunct Service Merchandise Corp., Jeff and Denise moved to, first, Roanoke, and then to Rocky Mount, Va. where they now reside. Jeff continues to play and record, and perform live. He is currently looking for other musicians to form a Christian Rock group; Jeff owns his own recording studio "Awesome Sound!! Recording Studio".
Jeff continues to study the Bible and he and Denise, and son Jeffrey attend church at Franklin Heights Baptist Church. He continues to be inspired musically by groups that have come up through the years, and by some artists who have long since stopped contributing (Syd Barrett, for one). Jeff's music is different than that which you would find on Contemporary Christian Radio, choosing to offer a sound that is more parallel to non-Christian groups in the hopes of attracting those who do not know Jesus as their Savior.
