The song is a promotional single released by JoJo for her third studio album of the same name, Mad Love. (2016) and is the follow-up to lead single No Apologies (feat. Wiz Khalifa).
"Mad Love." is a slow R&B ballad with old school vibes and was described by Teen Vogue as being "a big song, encompassing all the emotions of an up-and-down relationship". JoJo said that the song and it's title related to her East Coast origins and also her hectic love life, having gotten out of a toxic relationship she had found herself stuck in, and said the song was a "product of talking about that". She also said that "Mad Love" had become a favourite phrase of hers.
