After the termination of her pregnancy (“Baby Birch”), the decision to take time away from her lover (“On a Good Day”), the shame and guilt she feels at the failure of both her relationship and her pregnancy (“You and Me Bess”), her attempt to get strong and healthy on her own (“In California”) the singer finally breaks down and returns to her lover, asking for him to take her back, to give her another chance to love him again.
However, there are many hints that this attempt to begin anew in this relationship will only lead to more pain, perhaps even death.
The threat of death and deceit is confirmed in the following song, “Go Long”, where the grisly legend of Blue Beard is used as a metaphor for her relationship to this man.
