Here’s an interesting round table discussion with John Powell, Hans Zimmer, Trent Reznor and Danny Elfman about scoring their movie soundtracks. If you’re a John Powell fan (which I guess you are, since you’re here!), I think you’ll like it! Even though he seems a little awkward in the discussion. Maybe he was intimidated by the other composers in the room? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSAF9_ZHjfc

The new theme for How to Train Your Dragon 2 is Powell's best theme ever and one of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard.

httyd2 has a very good soundtrack, and I like it :) But I agree with Nuke_The_USA: it's just the inheritance of the first one and I'd expected more new breathtaking tracks like Forbidden Friendship... Stoick's Ship is one of my favourites tho, and the film is just as great as the first one *-*

Unknowny503, my tears gave credits. :'( I know well that original themes are often being used for sequels, but I also believe that composers should give plenty of room to new motives. For myself I found only two alike: Flying with Mother and Toothless Found. What are yours? It is just... as I wrote on few months ago "I expect battle-like score", but got calm, merely background chill-out music. I was proud of the original score, as it's one of the fewest that can be encouraged to be listened apart from the movie. Its follower is a good one, but stays good only while watching the sequel.

Nuke_The_USA, you don't expect radically new motives for a sequel, do you? I believe it was quite predictable to hear the same notes. Pst. at least give some credit to Stoick's Ship

Strongly disagree. HTTYD2 Score is not better, because: it's not that diversified as the original score where you can recall pacified IDM or ambient-like (call it on your taste) tracks - Forbidden Friendship, dramatic and literally breathtaking Test Drive, there were even mystical, folkish and truly viking inspired compositions! All of these absent in second score which is rather linear, calm and exploiting original motives, instead of composing something new. I can highlight only Flying with Mother, this is the only track that gives me goosepimples feeling. Lovely chorus, uplifting atmosphere and bells (if that's them).

Don't think there will compositions like Forbidden Friendship. Score is going to be more battle and swift. Well, according to trailer I expect that.

I'm scared of the second httyd score... can it be as good as the first? will he be able to surpass forbidden friendship?
