John Townsend is an American Rock and Roll musician (keyboard) & singer-songwriter who was most active during the early 70s. He was part of The Rubber Band together with Courtland Pickett and John Wyker. Later on hooked up with fellow keyboardist Ed Sanford to form The Sanford-Townsend Band. They are considered a one-hit wonder, scoring a hit single in 1977 with "Smoke from a Distant Fire".
