Biography

Combine insightful, observant and thought provoking lyrics, outstanding musicianship and a decent dose of groovy hooks and melodies and you have South Australia’s ‘John Woods Band’. Their unique formula of thoughtful song writing and pop sensibilities make it impossible not to shuffle your toosh just a little. It is this magical formula that has seen the band sweep through the South Australian music scene, capturing the hearts and imaginations of public and industry alike.

Formed in 2006, the band launched itself on the back of John’s already growing momentum as a solo singer-songwriter. They quickly went on to be the first Adelaide band to really shine in the emerging ‘Roots’ scene, scoring major supports with a list of national touring artists such as Ash Grunwald, Mia Dyson, Carus and the True Believers and Xavier Rudd.

On top of this, the guys have gone on to play Big Day Out and most impressively, a series of sell out headlining shows in venues around Adelaide including the Governor Hindmarsh; consolidating their reputation as Adelaide’s hottest emerging act around.

The key to John Woods Bands’ success is the depth of soul and spirit found in the songs behind a charming delivery of light-hearted, tasty tunes. The members of the band (John, Tim Bennett and Dan Ryan) are not only sensational and highly respected musicians in their own right, but genuinely lovely people, a fact that shines through in every live performance and is clearly a part of what keeps the punters coming back.

After a crazy couple of years, the boys retreated to the solitude of the studio, calming and refocussing their artistic energies on recording their latest EP. Enlisting the services of friends they have made along the way, some of the special guests on the EP include Gavin Clarke (trombone) and John Bedggood (violin) an artist who has toured the world and played with Australian artists such as Bernard Fanning, Lior and the John Butler Trio.

The final product of this break from the live music scene is an EP titled ‘Under the Tripping Giant’ – a piece of work that accurately captures the energy and spirit of the bands live performances while lending the listener some insight into the real journey the songwriter has travelled; a journey not quite as glamorous as the bands public experience. Under the Tripping Giant is due for release in December so stay tuned for details coming soon!
