Honestly, when it comes to heavier Zorn's stuff I much prefer newer "avant-prog" stuff than classic releases like Naked City. Kenny Grohowski is by far THE BEST drummer that Zorn ever had and his playing is the main reason why Zorn's latest releases are so freaking powerful and dynamic

Grohowski is great, especially in Imperial Triumphant, but I think Kenny Wollesen is Zorn's best all time drummer, especially with Masada-related projects. His adaptability and dynamics are so smooth, he can go from third-stream to free-form chaos so seamlessly

Legitimately unbelievable that Tzadik is on streaming services now, almost as unprecedented as ECM's entry in 2017. I don't think this was on anybody's 2023 bingo card. Then again, neither was my girlfriend leaving me for a man who doesn't know how to read. Anything can happen. Check out The Circle Maker, Bar Kokhba, and At The Mountain of Madness. HMU with any non-Zorn Tzadik recommendations as I'm quite poorly versed.

Never thought I'd see the day that all his stuff would be on streaming. I feel like a fat kid in a candy shop.

Full Fathom Five is another winner, some beautiful atmospheres on there that even flirts with the moods of IAO. Brian Marsella on the piano makes for a nice variation from Jamie Saft in that mysterious and occult mindset.

I've come to the conclusion that Spinoza is Zorn's masterpiece, incredible performance/mix

Naked City probably, maybe the Big Gundown. If you prefer the first, go for the whole Naked City catalog. If the latter, check out his Filmworks series. For some Jewish jazz gems check out his Masada songbook, it's amazing. And probably my favorite release from Zorn, At the Mountains of Madness by Electric Masada, an absolutely mind-blowing and mesmerizing live avantgarde jazz/metal/noise album.

you know there are artists who manage to get by simply with the money they get from streaming services? i know zorn would probably not be one of know as he's relatively underground but then again you can reach a wider audience once you get digital and it's his conscious decision not to go online with any of the tzadik releases. also imagine buying all those records he releases every year and paying the for the fucking shipping to get them to eastern europe, i simply cannot afford that man and there's nothing i can do about it. he doesn't even have a bandcamp or anyfuckingthing that would let me give him any sum, even if that's just a regular $15 as a token of gratitude for all the entertainment i get from listening to his stuff

I think if Zorn was trying to make money, he'd.. umm make music that doesn't sound like it's from mars.

Still wish John would just start a Tzadik Bandcamp page so on every Bandcamp Friday I could throw the big bucks at him. But it seems rather unlikely that will ever happen.

Songs for Petra is certainly pleasant enough. 2020 should turn out to be another strong year for Zorn, the pledgemusic bounceback is a success, Covid-19 be damned. All Hail Zorn, obviously.

John Zorn is like Frank Zappa for me, a body of work with slightly bizarre and unconvincing fusion of musical soundscapes.

Finally got my hands on Les Maudits, sadly from Google Music as opposed to boomkat for lossless downloads or the physical version. Two minutes in and it doesn't seem the old man will run out of ideas any decade soon.

Second spins in, Baphomet is wild too. Maybe not as wild as Calculus, but there sure are some mad grooves on this one. For all of its craziness, 2020 has brought us the Zorn goodness already!
