Biography
jucu (real name: Justine Curt Cardinal) uses synth, lo-fi, ambient, OPM, folk and shoegaze while creating deeply emotional soundscapes as an 18-year-old independent Filipino musician. The musician 'juculofi' launched his musical career with "Into The Darkness" in 2021 — which was followed by two consecutive EP sequels and conceptual albums about loneliness (Void), coping behaviors (Pills) and weak optimism (Glimmerings).
"The End Has Arrived" album signaled a major change in his musical direction because it served as his last instrumental project before he began releasing albums with his own singing and more personal lyrics. Songs like "Cookies and Cream" and "Kailangan Pa Bang Aminin?" showcase his growing maturity and emotional depth.
The musical creation process of jucu flows from genuine feelings which include his battles with love and mental well-being alongside his unsheathed youthful emotions. The EP release of 'tanging alaala' represents his biggest musical achievement to date because it guides listeners through moments of love and past memories and sadness.
A name change such as "juculofi" reflects the developmental process of Justine Curt Cardinal’s persona. At first, the name was "juculofi", referring to the lo-fi music genre that dominated the early stage of the musician’s work, including the debut EP "Into The Darkness." The name emphasized his desire to produce laid-back, moody instrumental songs.
But as he progressed from youth to maturity his vision too changed. jucu started to listen to other genres that include indie synth, ambient, folk and original filipino music or popularly known as OPM, apart from exploring its experimentations on going from instrumental compositions to composing songs. Transition to "jucu" offers artists expanded and individualistic artistic direction that personally does not need to be associated with genre or style.
Unfortunately, circumstances befell our subject that forced him to shorten his name to “jucu” – that is him – a name more universal and easily associated with the artist himself yet also indicative of his evolution as an artist. It is new sequel in his life where he is more into singing and choruses as opposed to lyrics.
