Biography
Their songs are a requiem for discerning music lovers. King Thief, the unassuming quintet from the cobblestone streets of St. Louis, is the harbinger of a burgeoning new sound: pop cabaret. Fusing together sonic bits of new wave, punk, rock, pop, classical, and smartly wrapping it up with a sincere thespian's flair, King Thief is poised to expand their success on a national level.
While King Thief is onstage the floor before them is a forest of arms, fists pumping like pistons to their infectious rhythms, voices singing along with that of Brooks Bracken, King Thief's dynamic impresario. A self taught pianist and jack-of-all-trades musician, Bracken pens the group's lyrics. He left his place at the keys to interact with the group's audience; longtime pal Nevada Alpine Kent (truly his name) assumed the job; "Al" has also incorporated organ and lush vocal harmonies. Louis Wall, King Thief's classically trained percussionist who did a stint in a youth orchestra, lays solid beats on drums; together he and bassist Jon Hill create a formidable rhythm section. Guitarist Sam Hill completes the group with his inovative playing style that is more about sweeping melodies and textures than traditional rock riffs, though he doesn't shy away from them when it is tasteful.
King Thief's music is a dramatic play upon rock, less pretentious than the 70s operas, less formulaic than their pop compatriots. If ever there was a group to merit hype, they are it.
