Short Description:
Ladbroke arose from the slimy remains of bands such as Fortress, Getbroers and Slapdash some 3 years ago. Ever since, the band has been influenced by a variety of bands and has explored some of the 3 billion subgenres of modern and olschool punkrockmetalmusic. Still searching for that genuine sound, Ladbroke have always been openminded towards new ideas and every member in the band has their own unique input, resulting in a heterogeneous setlist ranging from happy-poppunk-tunes to fast-shredding-speedrock and even some metal-influenced-beatdown-core.
History:
The early history of the band we now know as Ladbroke was written during the first school term in 2002, when Makzin and Steven decided to participate in the annual free stage at the Christmas fair of their school. Because they wanted to play some covers to impress the girls, they needed some other musicians. Kenmeister, 6th grader and a friend of theirs, seemed the perfect choice as bass player. He had already gained some experience playing in the rather unknown band Fortress and he was still playing in Slap-dash at that time. The trio rehearsed a couple of times in Kenmeister’s attic and concluded that they perhaps could use a drummer. After a fierce search they met Massen, a young talent with lots of wild rumours about him. When Massen joined in, Ladbroke was officially born with the following line-up: Makzin: guitar, vocals; Steven: guitar; Massen: drum; Kenmeister: bass, vocals.
The first rehearsal with the entire band took place in the sleeping room of Steven’s little brother. Ladbroke was an instant hit, because the neighbours treated the band on some potatoes. Sadly, they did not know how to serve because they smashed the potatoes against Steven’s house. This gave our young punkheroes a boost of selfconfidence and they thought they were more or less ready for the big gig. The evening before, a dress rehearsal was held. It was a little show for some friends. At the last moment it was decided that Makzin would do the lead vocals, because Kenmeister was having some problems with his voice. The crowd went wild and Ladbroke had a ball. They played four covers from some of their favourite bands: The Vandals, The Ataris, No Use For A Name and Flatcat.
The moment of truth had arrived. On Thursday 18 December a legendary show took place. It was overhyped by StijnxEdge and hence a lot of people from the scene were present. The show was THE hot topic on messageboards for the next couple of weeks and because of this, Ladbroke became known a bit more. Since Makzin and Steven had both only started playing the guitar, an experienced guitarist was searched to reinforce Ladbroke. Gwi, who used to play alongside Kenmeister in Fortress, was this new addition to the band. Ladbroke played with three guitarists for a while, but finally they decided that Makzin should put away his guitar as to concentrate entirely on the lead vocals. At that time Ladbroke mainly played covers (such as The Ballad from Millencolin and I’m the One from the Descendents), but they also started working on some songs of their own which gradually took their places on the playlist. During the next shows Ladbroke entertained the crowd with covers (Propagandhi: Purina Hall of Fame, Lagwagon: Mr Coffee and Burn, and twice even the eighteen-minute-long song "The Decline" from their all-time heroes NOFX) as well as with their own songs, which are quite varieted because the young musicians from Ladbroke have not yet tried out all of the many different varieties of punkrock.
After a lot of gigs in local venues with bands such as Sevenhate, Sparkling Bombs, No Children, I against I, Flatcat, Screaming Out, Efor11, Disengage, Brave like a cowboy, SFP, Braitlag, Pacific (Beach Patrol), the boys got the opportunity to record a demo-cd at Swamp Studios in the autumn of 2003. After some more shows with bands such as Betterfood, Forced Hate, Speedball JR, Cornflames, The Travoltas, Ladbroke ended a successful year and decided to take it easy for some time and to prepare for their exams. During the summer break of 2004 Ladbroke started working minutely on some new songs.
In the three years that followed, Ladbroke played some shows, but their main focus was the new material. Plans to make a new demo-cd were made and Massen started buying some "cheap" home recording equipment to do the job himself. Those initial plans were soon discarded when the five-some realised they had enough material to fill a whole full length cd. It took them two long years (and maybe a couple of months more) to record every song just the way they wanted and after that long period of time, they finally decided they should let the world know what they had been up to. With the help of some local friends (Stijnedge and OHK) they organised a big party on the 6th of april (2007) (with their friends Flatcat, Gino's Eyeball and Indeavor) at the Terminus (Ostend) to celebrate the release of their first full length album entitled: "Without Nipples, Boobs Are Just Pointless".
