Biography
Lara Croft is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Square Enix (previously Eidos Interactive) video game series Tomb Raider.
The character has been the face of video games, films, comic books and brand endorsements, and made her debut in music in 1998, at the height of Tomb Raider's popularity. Rhona Mitra, a model who portrayed Lara Croft at official events, recorded an album in character with Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame). While the lead single "Getting Naked" took a distinctly in-your-face pop-rock approach to its sound, the majority of Lara Croft songs take on a slightly electronic, "trippy" alternative pop sound.
Notably, there were plans for Lara Croft to debut as a singer as early as 1996, with previous Lara model Nathalie Cook recording the upbeat pop song "Raiders" as Lara. It was pitched to record labels, but never released.
Lara is presented as a beautiful, intelligent, and athletic archaeologist-adventurer who ventures into ancient, hazardous tombs and ruins around the world.
Created by Toby Gard during his employment at British developer Core Design, the character first appeared in the 1996 video game Tomb Raider. Other appearances include video game sequels, printed adaptations, a series of animated short films, feature films (portrayed by Angelina Jolie), and merchandise related to the series. Official promotion of the character includes a brand of apparel and accessories, action figures, and model portrayals. Lara Croft has also been licensed for third-party promotion, including television and print advertisements, music-related appearances, and as a spokesmodel.
