Lena Franca, born in 1957, is a caboverdean singer. Born in in Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde, she started singing at the early age of six. Years later, she joined Simentera, the most important band of the island. There she met musician Mario Lucio Sousa and with his help recorded her first solo album.
Her debut CD is entitled "Amornado" (for Love and Morna) and is a collection of 9 haunting and mournful songs. In a very traditional way, Lena's morna songs are 'a sufferer's music' and explore the Soul of Cabo Verde. Mario Lucio Sousa, producer and part-composer of the album) declares "We are melancholic, but it is a happy melancholy. We sing with our souls, but our singing is not sad. If it invites you to cry, then it means crying for beauty."
