Lenni-Kalle Taipale founded the group (Trio) in the fall of 1995. In the beginning the group consisted of Lenni-Kalle, bassist Timo Tuppurainen and drummer Sami Järvinen. In the summer of 1999 the bass player was replaced by Timo Tolonen.

Trio's first gig was as a warm up band for Trio Töykeät on December 12th, 1995 in the Jazz-Café Louhi in Espoo's Cultural Centre. Jukka Hauru, a critic for one of Finland's biggest newspapers (Helsingin Sanomat) gave it a raving review and started Trio's jazz career on a positive note. On April 5th, 1997 Trio won the Finnish semi-final in the Pohjolan Kyky 97 Talent show in the light music category. The prize for winning the competition a TV documentary about the band which aired on December 15th, 1997. In the competition final in Oslo (May 24th, 1997) Trio came in second. The competition songs were Lenni-Kalle Taipale compositions.

Trio has made three albums in total. Timo Tuppurainen was the bassist during the first two albums. In March 2002 a new group called the Lenni-Kalle Taipale Group was born. The group was made up of bassist Ari-Pekka (Ape) Anttila and drummer Toni Porthén.
