This album for me kind of works the opposite way when comparing to the rest of their discography. Usually I like their albums more with each listen, but this one I liked it more on the first audition, then a little less with each subsequent listen. Don't get me wrong: I still think it's a very good album, solid, consistent and with Einar's voice being ridiculously good (again). BUT, almost every single one of the songs from Aphelion follows the exact same formula, and it kinda get's too tiring, with the only exceptions being the last two songs. So, until the 2nd or 3rd track it's awesome, then it starts to feel like you're hearing it again, and again and again. So, it's a very good and solid work, but it lacks the typical "avant-gardness" we expect from these guys. Would give it a 7,5 or 8 out of 10.

Glossy, catchy songwriting and production paired with some of Einar's best vocal performances make for sublime aural candy. If anyone else was singing this it would probably be shite, but this man's singing range elevates everything.

Its easilly better than Melina, maybe better than pitfalls. However its quite heavy on a pretty standard chorus/verse format. It easily has some of Einars best singing. If Leprous can fuse the more soft, but operatic prog rock style with a little bit of their crazy avant prog metal, they would be back to being masters of prog. This album is pretty good, but its a little too safe

Melina was extremely underwhelming and lacking variety. Pitfalls fixed the problems that Melina had.

Not as many good songs as Pitfalls or Congregation, but still has it's moments. "Have You Ever?" is amazing.

There is a lot to love here on the first few listens - I hope to come back here in a week and retract my thoughts, but I feel like the last 2.5 albums has been a similar formula of insanely quiet moments with Einar doing his soft drippy falsetto, then bangs hard with a massive drum fill into loud choruses and back again to extremely quiet sections, 2-3 times per song. A few songs like that are great, but the entire album of that gets frustrating. Sometimes you need songs to just stay at fairly consistent levels throughout, or at least add a few tracks that break the mould on here. I think there are just too many moments where I want the momentum to stay high after a ridiculously catchy chorus, but it just breaks down and kills it again.

I don't think you are wrong about that. This was supposed to be an EP, but got expanded due to covid. So not all of the material was written with an LP format in mind. Castaway Angels is kind of an exception as it builds up linearly where every instruments grows as the song progresses and keeps exploding towards the end. Still I'm enjoying this much more than the previous album. So maybe this isn't the best front to back listen, but every song is interesting and enjoyable to listen to and work really well on their own. While I enjoyed pitfalls I don't think I could say the same for that album. This album continues the same direction the band kept going with in pitfalls, but on an individual song level does it better.
