Liam Brennan

Liam Brennan (b. 1962) is a Scottish actor whose extensive theatre credits include multiple performances up at Edinburgh, predominantly at its Traverse Theatre and increasingly – as his stage career has developed – at its Royal Lyceum Theatre.

In 2001, he made his debut at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. His performance as Macduff in Macbeth led to many other roles there, including as Orsino in Twelfth Night (2002), Bolingbroke in Richard II (2003), the title role in Edward II (2003) and Angelo in Measure for Measure (2004, also in its subsequent tour in the USA).

In 2007 he appeared in Tom Fool at the Bush Theatre, but until 2012 most of his performances were at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. Here, he played in Romeo and Juliet (2010), A View from the Bridge (2011), and, in 2012, Of Mice and Men and The Lieutenant of Inishmore, to name but a few. Performances in other regional theatres include Of Mice and Men (as Lenny) at Perth Theatre (2008), as the title role in Macbeth at the Nottingham Playhouse (2008), and in Glasgow and the Derby Playhouse.

Most recently, under Tim Carroll’s direction, he plays Clarence in Richard III and Orsino in Twelfth Night. This transferred from Shakespeare’s Globe in 2012 to The Apollo Theatre in London’s West End, where he will be performing alongside Mark Rylance until 2013.

Brennan’s screen work includes films Gas Attack and No Man’s Land, and television parts in Machair, High Road, Gas Attack and Jess the Border Collie (all parts from between 2001 and 2004). Radio work spans 2000 to 2012 and includes Macbeth, Rob Roy, Master of Ballantrae, Piper Alpha, Of Mice and Men, La Princesse de Cleve, and – most recently – the parts of Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and Gino in Down and Out in Auchnakinnan.
