Biography
LIONSHARE has always approached hip-hop with a childlike sense of wonder. Their first song was a 2008 bedroom recording about how cool it would be to have spinning rims on headphones. Shows followed that summer, and ever after, sweaty affairs with likeminded party rappers such as Das Racist and Ninjasonik. Audiences in Brooklyn and beyond soon perked their ears to the telltale thump of “Trip to Feza” and other swaggering tunes. An EP, Shareholders Report Vol. 1, brought these songs to merch tables and the Internet.
Shortly after this release, new songs popped up online, with concepts floating high in the rafters: the importance of putting deceased friends on your guest list; the possibility of accidental impregnation via floating semen in a hot tub; the joys of Zebra Cakes; the tenuous connection between fellatio and the Vietnam War. These ideas and others cohere danceably on the latest recording, Shareholders R.E.P.O.R.T. Vol. 1 Part 2: Orphan Acronym, a mixtape. The title – an orphan acronym is one whose letters don’t stand for anything – speaks to LIONSHARE’s playful subversion of hip-hop’s eccentricities and contradictions. The sound follows the group as they flirt shamelessly with dubstep and other genres of electronic music, but there’s still a sense that they’ll return to rap and beats at the end of the night, with sheepish grins and flowers.
