Biography
Mandarin Movie is one of many projects from Chicago native and current Brazil resident Rob Mazurek, a cornetist, composer, painter, improviser, and multi-media artist whose unique musical style draws from free jazz, hard-bop, experimental electronica and minimalism.
He is co-founder and member of Chicago Underground Duo/Trio/Quartet/Orchestra as well as avant-jazz/funk ensemble Isotope 217, and more recently the big band experience Exploding Star Orchestra.
Mandarin Movie's members have a long & rich musical history covering a wide spectrum of collaborations in the jazz/avant/indie & experimental worlds of music. Here are the players & some basics:
Alan Licht - guitar. Member of Text of Light (w/ Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), William Hooker, Christian Marclay, Ulrich Krieger, Tim Barnes & DJ Olive), Run On & Love Child. He has played with: Tom Verlaine, Arto Lindsay, Royal Trux, Loren Mazzacane & The Blue Humans. He has toured with Aki Onda, Oren Ambarchi & Tetuzi Akiyama.
Matt Lux - bass/electronics. A member of Isotope 217, he's recorded and/o toured with: Tranquility Bass, Azita, Diverse (Choc. Industries), Plush, Smog, Sonny Smith, 5ive Style & Nobukazu Takemora.
Steve Swell - trombone. He's recorded & toured with Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Anthony Braxton & Jemeel Moondoc to name a few. He has 10 releases as a leader & more then 60 as a contributor.
Jason Ajemian - double bass/electronics. Jason has releases on Okkadisc, Locust Music & Lucky Kitchen.
Frank Rosaly - drums. Frank's worked with such artists as Ken Vandermark, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Kent Kessler & Jim Baker to name a few.
Rob Mazurek - computer, moog source, electric eels, pianette, cornet.
