Marathonmann was founded in the fall of 2011. The EP Die Stadt gehört den Besten was released in summer 2012, the title track of which appeared on the CD supplement of the punk magazine Ox-Fanzine. It became a hit with the scene, which brought the band to the attention of the label Century Media. The band then toured with Casper, Comeback Kid and Living with Lions.

The debut album Holzschwert was released on Century Media in spring 2013. Tom Mischok from Adolar, Richard Meyer from KMPFSPRT and Guido Knollmann from the Donots were involved as guest singers. The band went on tour with Heisskalt in March 2013 for the release of Holzschwert, immediately followed by a support tour for Itchy Poopzkid.

They recorded a cover version of the Motörhead song Bite the Bullet for a Metal Hammer magazine sampler, which was also available as a bonus track from Holzschwert on iTunes.

In 2013, guitarist Thomas Fischer left the band and was replaced by Christian Wölk. At the end of 2013, Marathonmann completed a 17-date headlining tour through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. At the beginning of 2014, they were on tour as the support act for Jennifer Rostock. At the same time, the EP Kein Rückzug Kein Aufgeben was released as a download and limited edition 12inch vinyl.

The second album …und wir vergessen was vor uns liegt was released in 2014 and reached number 46 in the German album charts. After Marcel Konhäuser left the band in 2015, Johannes Scheer became the new drummer.

In 2017, the song Rücklauf was used in the German Netflix series Dark.

In early 2019, it was announced that the band had signed a contract with the label Redfield Records and that their album Die Angst sitzt neben dir would be released in the middle of the year.

2023 saw the release of the album Maniac, on which the band reinvented themselves musically and revisited their own childhood and youth in the style of 80s nostalgia around successful series such as Stranger Things in a synthesizer-pop guise.

The band belongs to the genre of post-hardcore. Captain Planet, Muff Potter and Turbostaat are cited as major influences. Sometimes emocore elements are also recognized or Marathonmann are classified as a punk band. On the album Maniac, released in 2023, the band's established style changed significantly and, in addition to 80s nostalgia homage, was mainly expanded to include synthesizer sound and is significantly more pop-heavy than the other albums.
