and if you hear whitfield's wonder first time in the fingerpainting album like me, you might wanna hear "patrice" by whitfield. its a joy hearing him playing alongside Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, and Jack DeJohnette.

couldnt agree more really, as a diehard hancock fan, i wouldnt imagine that i would be satisfied with any tribute album, let alone loving it as i do now. the authentic musicality they establish while staying true to the compositions is amazing. the adroit sense of rhythm that whitfield and mcbride establish without the help of drums is also unavailable, such groovy rhythms and such musicality (verging on re-composition) rarely go together, i wsh i could hear more of mcbride and whitfield (and payton of course) playing together.

Mark Whitfield's playing on the album "Fingerpainting: The Music of Herbie Hancock" is exceptional. It's a very gentle, beautifully recorded album, where emphasis is on the compositions themselves. And because it's a trio album, with no kit drums, you get to hear the full extent of Mark's command of rhythm and harmony.
