Martian Tin Can are a Production trio who recorded in Manchester, UK 1994 -1998. Much of the work was done at Mark Pilkington's Thought Universe Electronic Music Studio (TUEMS). Martian Tin Can are Colin Laird, Mark Pilkington and Matt Smith. Their first release was the Media Virus EP (Vinyl only) which grabbed the attention of the likes of Ninja Tune and Lascelles' Orange Egg. This rare 4 track compilation was released on their own 'Sonic World Service' label with Mark, Colin and Matt using various pseudonyms (Martian Tin Can, Venusian Jazz Therapy). Subsequent releases were on compilations; Joking apart on Skam's '0161' and 'It's Lovely Here' on Guidance's 'Subtitled Take 1 - Music for Films that don't Exist Yet'. Mark Pilkington now uses both his own name and 'Thought Universe' for his electronic Music releases. Matt Smith has worked with Massive Attack and others in his hometown of Bristol, Colin Laird has since recorded as 'Harry Laird' and 'Superlads' with Danny Webbox and Beryl Baxter (Disco).
