It's not that any of the songs (except maybe show yourself) are bad individually. It's just that they all are pretty similar, with heavier verses and clean choruses. I think this makes it not work as an album for me. It's just a bit monotonous in my opinion.

Definitely not! For exemple, Steambreather is nothing alike Roots Remain, or Scorpion Breath is vastly different than Jaguar God... The album is varied enough just like the other records.

This is way better than I remembered, definitely the best from the last 3 albums. Solid record with some amazing bangers, Roots Remain being one of their best songs ever.

Even though I love Once More 'Round the Sun and enjoy The Hunter, this album was definitely a return to form for Mastodon in my eyes. I wouldn't call this their best effort (Crack the Skye exists after all), but this album definitely supports the notion that these guys are riff lords, prog masters, and expert songwriters. That, and a lot of the songs have this outlandish atmosphere, most notably in my favorite track Steambreather. This album makes me excited and hopeful for what venture they have in store next.

Really tried my best with this album but I just can't help but think it's Mastodon at their worst. The production is weak, I miss the rawness in the way the guitar and vocals sound and the drumming seems like such a step down from previous work aswell. Very sad since the first 4 mastodon albums are like maybe 4 of the most important metal albums ever to me.

Can't really seem to get into this one. There are definitely some good tracks ("Sultan's Curse," "Ancient Kingdom" and "Jaguar God" are all great, in fact), but there's a lot of pretty nondescript stuff that just bleeds and blends together and doesn't create a lasting impression, and the choice of "Show Yourself" for the lead single is baffling because that song is terrible, far and away the worst here.

I really wish there were more like Jaguar God on this, i would have held it higher. The more hard rock tracks feel a little tired, and this is coming from someone who welcomed the catchiness of The Motherload.

Very good album. "Roots Remain", "Andromeda" and "Jaguar God" are all new Mastodon classics.

No idea why Sultan's Curse was the single, it's by far the weakest track! Top contender for AOTY so far.

It brings to the table pretty much every good thing Mastodon's ever made. From both their heavy/progressive era and their more radio-friendly leanings from The Hunter and OMRTS. Top notch stuff.

I always found Mastodon's lyrics rather bad, but I feel like especially with this album they are just underselling themselves.
