"Colony of Birchmen" was, at the time of its release, Mastodon's biggest hit single, charting at #33 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart; however, it has since been surpassed in this respect by "Oblivion" and "Curl of the Burl". The track features backing vocals from Josh Homme, lead singer for desert rock band Queens of the Stone Age and stoner rock band Kyuss. The title is an allusion to the song "The Colony of Slippermen" by the progressive rock band Genesis.
