Born in 1792, Matteo Carcassi was an Italian guitarist & composer. Spending most of his live in Paris (where he died on 16th January 1853) he traveled widely across Europe where he gained a reputation as a virtuoso. He visited London in 1822, returning the following year with renewed success and again in 1828. He also toured extensively in Germany in 1824 & 1827.
Matteo Carcassi composed many pieces for the guitar, including a popular "method" (Op.59) which was copied, translated & revised on numerous occasions, owing to its easy-to-understand approach containing essential musical knowledge & basic guitar techniques. His most famous collection of pieces, though, are the 25 Etudes (Op. 60) which cover a variety of techniques without losing a pleasing melodic structure. As a result these Etudes have remained in the guitarists repertoire since their publication.
