Biography

Michael James Way was born on September 10, 1980, in Newark, New Jersey. He is currently the bassist in punk-post-hardcore rock band My Chemical Romance. He grew up in Belleville, New Jersey alongside his older brother Gerard Way. He notably coined My Chemical Romance's name after being inspired by the Irvine Welsh book, "Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance", while working at a Barnes and Noble book store. There, he also got his brother Gerard a job.

Mikey learned how to properly play bass in order to become part of the band, although in the "Life On The Murder Scene" DVD, he claims that he had been an amateur musician since he was young. Mikey can usually be seen playing a Highway 1 Precision Bass, a Fender Standard Precision Bass, or a Fender J. Mikey was also well-known in the 2000s for his glasses, which corrected his nearsightedness. However, after receiving Lasik eye surgery in May 2006, he no longer wears them.

In '06, Mikey had to temporarily leave the band because of personal problems. He left the band to live with band attorney Stacey Fass, where he saw a therapist four times a week and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After several weeks, he returned to the recording studio as a commuter. He returned to the band Fall of 2008.

Additionally, Mikey Way is currently married to Kristin Blanford (also known as Kristin Colby), whom he wed in 2016. He was previously married to Alicia Simmons from 2007-2013, after which they had a divorce.

After My Chem's breakup on March 22, 2013, and reformation on October 31, 2019, Mikey Way continues to contribute to the band. Their most recent tour, Long Live the Black Parade (as of November 2025), showcases the revival of the Black Parade in a theatrical, dramatic, and captivating way, and features Mikey Way as one of the characters in the Black Parade.
