Biography
Mindhead is a Seattle band composed of Joe Day (songwriter/singer), Seth Fikkert (drummer), Jono Orange (guitars/noises), and Jeff Morrow (bass/noises).
Mindhead formed in December 1999 when Joe Day was booked to play a solo show. Not a fan of playing solo, he tapped friends Fikkert and Morrow and Micah Kelley to play with him. Over the course of 3 weeks they assembled a set of songs that Joe Day had written over a 6 month duration after disbanding his previous band Static. The show was a success and the band decided to keep going.
In the summer of 2000 the band decided to part ways with Micah Kelley, opting for a 3-piece acoustic lineup. They worked hard playing numerous shows in coffee shops, clubs and colleges and established a dedicated fan base at this time.
In the fall of 2000, they invited their friend Jono Orange to join them on guitar with the main duty of adding depth of sonic textures to the already acoustic sound.
In the summer of 2001 they recorded their first full-length album Things Here Are Fine with producer Greg Young (Built To Spill, Kilmer, Autumn Poetry) and released it independently that December. It wasn’t long before it found regular rotation on 90.3 KEXP and reached #4 on John Richard’s weekly top 10. It also found support from Seattle’s 107.7 KNDD.
The band continued to play shows in clubs, festivals, and theaters over the next two years, touring regionally and expanding the fan base.
In 2003 they released their sophomore album How Not To Get There to a sold-out crowd at the Lincoln Theater in Mount Vernon, WA. Produced again by Greg Young, Mindhead was able to save more money and invest it in a bigger sounding album. They spent 6 months meticulously crafting what the band considers their strongest album.
Over the next 2 years, their number of shows tapered off as each band member has focused on pursuits outside of music. However, Joe has been writing songs for a 3rd album and the whole band is on board. It’s only a matter of time…
