Biography

Miquel López (Born 1 February 1669; Died: 7 June 1723) was a Spanish Baroque composer, organist and musicologist. Miguel López was Benedictine monk in Montserrat Monastery and headed the Escolania de Montserrat as choirmaster.

López joined the Escola de Montserrat in 1678 and was trained there by Joan Cererols and Joan Garcia until 1684. In 1686 he joined the Benedictine Order. He continued his studies from 1686 to 1696 at the monastery of San Martín de Madrid. At the same time, he worked there as an organist. From 1705 to 1715, he served as an organist at Sanct Benito de Valladollid.

López worked twice, from 1696 to 1705 and from 1715 to 1718, as choirmaster of the Escolania de Montserrat.

López wrote a story of Montserrat in Latin and an unmanaged music treatise. López has overcome spiritual vocal music with and without continuo accompaniment, some organ compositions, villancicos and some secular cantatas. His compositional activity generally aimed to bring musical innovations from other countries into line with his own musical culture in an evolutionary manner. He defended the musical approaches of Francesc Valls and thus the new modernity. His three-volume work Exagogue ad musicem in this regard has been lost.
