Biography
Modernboys Moderngirls are either punk rockers who play soul music or soul musicians who play punk rock. Influenced by the likes of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, the New York Dolls, Otis Redding and crates upon crates of classic soul and punk records, Modernboys Moderngirls are a 21st century garage soul band.
In the fall of 2009, they released their self-produced debut, ten song album, I Might As Well Break It. The record was hailed by Canadian reviewers as one of the most engaging, raw, rock ‘n roll records of the year. Modernboys Moderngirls have “the kind of spirit that could make a ship full of seasick sailors feel well enough to rock out to the point of sickness all over again”, wrote Exclaim Magazine. Herohill, one of Canada’s top music blogs gave out its thanks to the group for putting ” the brashness back in rock ‘n roll”. “leaves you sweat soaked, bruised and battered and remembering.” Ottawa Xpress called the album one of the top 10 albums of the year.
Before they had even released any music, Modernboys Moderngirls had already been making waves with festival appearances at Edgefest, NXNE, Halifax Pop Explosion and Canadian Music Week. Live, the band wore their punk/soul influences on their sleeves, prompting Chart Attack Magazine to observe that the band “rock out like the devil has taken them over”.
The band which had at different points carried 4-5 members is now a power trio, with Spanish-born bandleader and songwriter Akira Alemany on lead vocals and guitar, Venezuelan Juan Carlos Rivas on bass and Toronto-born Brett Millius on the drums.
In January 2011, the band completed its followup album and are readying it for release.
