Biography

Jamal Patterson, known to the hip hop world as Money Slim, was born in Brooklyn N.Y, raised in Vander Veer Projects, with a very big family. As a child drawing, playing basketball, and listening to rap music were his hobbies. At age 13 he no longer wanted to look up to rappers, he decided to become one. Soon after, he formed his first rap group, consisting of 3 other friends from the neighborhood. After performing several shows at the Arc (A popular night club in the early nineties) they were asked to open for “The Bush Babies” (A local rap group that achieved moderate success). Due to his grades declining his mother made him stop rapping and doing shows. After graduating from high school he attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia, majoring in Animation. It wasn’t long before he found out that one of the schools curriculums was audio engineering. The studio wasn’t much needless to say, but it had a microphone and Protools, and that’s all Slim needed. What started out as a couple of freestyles for fun turned into a buzz around campus, from their he entered in open mics around Philadelphia. However once financial aid ran out Slim had to leave school. He decided to start fresh again, and move with his girlfriend to Florida. It was their where he first began recording in a professional studio (Hide Away Studios w Jimmy Star). Prior to recording at Hide Away, Slim had never recorded a full song. However he found out quickly it wasn’t as easy as the freestyles he was accustomed to. After recording a few songs Slim felt like the hip hop scene in Florida was too slow. So he went back to New York, and started getting focused on putting out his first mixtape to showcase his skills. He started looking for a good studio to record and found Brown Sugar studios. Brown Sugar was very hands on, instructing him on breath control, counting bars, and how to construct a song properly. At that time he went by the moniker Brooklyn Slim and he started to notice there were a lot of up and coming rappers with Brooklyn in their names. So in attempts to separate himself from the rest of the flock he wanted a name that wasn’t so territorial, and easy to market to the public, so he went with Money Slim. With a new sound and a new name Money Slim was primed and ready to take the music world by storm. In 2007 Money Slim met Shawn Williams, an MTV Marketing Executive who liked his music and offered some guidance and advice, which led to several performances at “The Dunk Exchange” (a traveling sneaker exhibition). There, he was given the opportunity to open for established artists such as Joel Ortiz, Consequence, Loot, Channel Zero, and more. By 2009 his single Me All Day had been getting enough radio plays, that it landed him a spot on the soundtrack to “Know You Got Sole” a documentary about escalating sneaker culture ( available on ITunes). Money Slim is currently building an internet presence with the promotion of his mixtape “Money Talks”, while also recording new music every day. Slim is still learning new tricks to the trade and is destined to be a fan favorite to hip hop enthusiasts and casual rap fans alike.
