"One Day Fly" was the name of a Dutch temporary formation from 2001, formed by the creators of the television program "Kopspijkers." The group released the single "I wanna be a one day fly," which became a hit. The project was a parody of and protest against the then-famous television program "Starmaker." The name is broken English for the Dutch term "eendagsvlieg"; the correct English translation for a one-time hit is "One-Hit Wonder," and the insect is called a "mayfly."
In "Starmaker," young people were prepared for a big breakthrough in the music world. Critics, however, claimed that the program would only produce a few one-hit wonders. The creators of "Kopspijkers" also argued that the success and popularity of the participants and the single "Damn (I think I love you)" were largely due to the commercialism and hype surrounding the program. They wanted to demonstrate this by releasing a single themselves and scoring a hit with it using the same kind of hype as around "Starmaker."
The single was presented on "Kopspijkers." The mission succeeded; the single then reached the number one position in both the Mega Top 100 and the Top 40, displacing the Starmaker single from that position. Over 60,000 copies of "I wanna be a one day fly" were sold. In the sales Top 100 for 2001, the song ranked seventh; "Damn (I think I love you)" remained the best-selling single. The proceeds from this elaborate prank went to UNICEF.
