Biography
Trinidad's Onika Bostic, graduated from high school at the age of 16, and shortly after she became a member of GEM radio where she found her love for producing and broadcasting. In 1999 she was faced with a challenge and decided to move to Antigua to join the band “Burning Flames” and became lead singer. According to the leader of the group, they came to Trinidad looking for a lead singer and Onika was recommended highly by most.
By 2002 Onika became very popular after releasing one of her most well-known songs called “Mash It Up” and in 2003 she was crowned the youngest soca diva. The last time she displayed her chanting skills she swept first, second and third places in the soca division of Antigua’s 2004 Carnival with a mega hit called “Get on Bad”.
The rising star died in the intensive care unit of Port-of-Spain General Hospital at around 9 pm on December 19, 2004. She succumbed to head and spinal injuries sustained in a car accident at the corner of Erica Street and Eastern Main Road, Laventille, on December 11. She was buried on December 23, 2004 in a private ceremony at the Lapeyrouse Cemetery, Port-of-Spain. Her funeral took place on what would have been her 25th birthday.
