My ears are having a major eargasm listening to this band! Dazzling synthpop/new wave! BTW, I saw Kurt Cobain in a pic wearing an OMD shirt. It's obviously an out of print shirt by now, but did they make reprints of it?

that's excellent! so cool to learn that kurt cobain was into omd (or at least liked the merch). funnily enough, omd actually added that shirt to their webstore again not long ago and it's still available.

I had no idea they were New Wave/Synthpop. Their top 40 hits made me cringe and flee when I even heard their name. But I've discovered they have some amazing other stuff reminiscent of Space (channel I re-discovered OMD on), Alan Parsons, Sparks, Art of Noise, etc. Life is strange...

Totally hooked on these guys since seeing them play last week! That show was so incredibly fun to watch, one of the few bands I've seen that so very obviously enjoy playing to a live audience. They visibly had so much fun. Pure class.

I don't know about that, but they certainly picked up the torch after Kraftwerk dropped it after Computer World.

For a brief moment in history they were the best in the world at what they were doing. Architecture and Morality is such a masterpiece. One of the greatest bands in the history of synthpop. Top 5 easily!

Actually, they were more popular than DM till 1984. Unfortunately, the masses were not prepared for the Dazzle Ships Masterpiece and OMD were not prepared to keep it up, so they just switched to banal synthpop to stay commercial, when Depeche Mode kept evolving with "Black Celebration" and "MFTM".

Thanks for all your replies! I hear that a lot, that Depeche Mode had better consecutive albums, and I totally respect that opinion. I've really tried to get into their albums, but I just hear a lot of "eh". For me, even when OMD went more commercial/pop with their music, I still very much enjoyed it for what it is. "So in Love" & "Tesla Girls" are some of my favorite OMD songs, despite how "poppy" they are. But then again, that's just me and music taste is subjective anyways.

I also like the poppier side of OMD. At least some of it. Just not as much as Dazzle Ships and Architecture And Morality, which are amazing. My favourite songs on the pop albums were rarely the most popular. All Wrapped Up, Talking Loud And Clear, Bloc Bloc Bloc, The Lights Are Going Out, Flame Of Hope, Watch Us Fall are great songs to me. Also recently discovered the last three albums. Not bad.

They definitely should have made an album full of stuff like "The Misunderstanding" and "The New Stone Age". Those songs were pretty atypical for their albums, yet OMD for sure were dark a f way before all those gothic kids. Proto-Darkwave!
