Just to confuse the name thing even more, there's a third Paul Kelly who is also good. This one does music for films, which ordinarily isn't all that interesting away from the films, but in this case the instrumentals stand up well on their own. It's moody guitar rock that's not hard rock, but it's not wimpy either. Here's a link to the AMG review of one of his albums. http://www.allmusic.com/album/soundings-in-film-mw0000322694

In a rare collaboration, iconic Australian singer/songwriter, Paul Kelly, teams up with internationally renowned jazz musician Paul Grabowsky, to create Meet Me In The Middle of the Air as part of Queensland Music Festival 2011! See http://www.qmf.org.au

Wipqozn - you should have opened with Cloud Control and the Middle East, most people would have stopped listening after you listed the first 5 acts. Sure they may be solid bands, but in the grand scheme of things they are going to do nothing for the Aussie music scene.

Birds of Tokyo, Trial Kennedy, Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, Gyroscope, The Temper Trap, Whitley, Children Collide, Angus and Julia Stone, Paul Dempsey, Sparkadia, The Middle East, Cog, Cloud Control. They're my favorites right now, so many more I like and so many more I am keen to listen to. I know this is completely subjective and you probably don't like most of them but you can't say there isn't any good Australian music, must not be look hard enough...or at all

I'm with Wipozn. Down here in Melbourne there are tonnes of good bands trying to get noticed. You just gotta get out there and wade through the crap, but the good is there

"he doesn't sound Australian, does he." Depends on what songs you listen to. Did he try to get a more 'universal' sound when he was trying to break the US market ?. On the other hand, listen to the album 'Songs of the South" - the only voice / words more australian was slim dusty :)

Surely one of the finest songwriters going in the last 20 years. Amazing stuff! (And I'm talking about the Australian Paul Kelly, not the others.)
