Biography
Peter served in the army during the 1939/1946 war for six years in Nigeria and Burma. He subsequently became an oral and maxillo-facial surgeon in Oxford, but had a consuming interest in music from his youth. At various times he studied piano, harmony, counterpoint and orchestration under Dr. Reginald Johnson and, later, piano under Vivian Langrish and Ruth Harte.
Scarlet and Black, an opera, was written between 1967 and 2004 and had been a part-time project, acompanying his professional medical career and work as an artist. Inspired by Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir, Peter began the project after learning of an English translation by G.K. Scott Moncrieff.
In addition to Scarlet and Black, he wrote a Sonata for cello and piano, a piano sonata and other works.
He would not have described himself as a minor genius. He would have described himself as a bricklayer.
