I grew up just a few miles from PW's home town of West Plains, Mo., where he was/is such a legend that the main drag is called Porter Wagoner Blvd. I watched his show every Saturday afternoon as a kid, awed that someone from the backwoods of the Ozark hills had his own TV show. I remember his introducing Dolly and hearing her sing "Coat of Many Colors" for the first time. Cajungrandma is right: the Wagonmasters were a great band. I can still the faces of the fiddler and steel guitar player. I wonder if those old shows are archived somewhere on the Internet? Thanks for the memories, Porter and last.fm.

Another great country star that doesn't get the attention he truly deserves! And that's why i made this group: Country from the 50s & 60s To make sure that classic country artists like Porter won't be forgotten. It was he who made Dolly known to the world and he made outstanding songs/albums himself. R.I.P. Porter.

He will be missed.... I watch the reruns on RFD tv . I enjoy him . He truly had a great sense of Humor and a serious side as well. Porter had some of the best musicians in his band. He will forever be in my heart. Keep on singing Porter !

Aww! I want his music, but can't seem to find it anywhere on the net ;(. Maybe because i didn't look hard enough, but oh well. Some of you listeners may have something, if you do, send it to me. Don't care if it is a best of compilation, would be nice to get some music from him. YouTube has a lot of great songs, but I don't really like clicking my way from video to video. Especially when I'm doing other things.

Carroll county is in Tennessee. Walter Browning was a former state govenor. As I understand , this song is based upon a true story. Rest in peace, Porter.
