This is just nice to put on when you have a relaxing afternoon and even in the background. Most tracks are chilled. Some are more dancey (hip hop and house influences). But it’s not bad at all. Too many “purple rain fans” write off his 90s stuff. In my opinion it’s some of his best work in the 90s albums. Even the contractual albums Come and chaos + disorder were great!

Emancipation could be a flowing record, but it gradually ebbing cuz it's lacking spontaneous reflections & reasons are alienation that Prince felt during this time. He called it 'a record he was born to make'. While U don't doubt his feelings - dedication to Mayte which he expressed on 2nd disc, U somehow doubt that grand idea of this being his artistic oeuvre. One also must doubt a marriage/family life thing. In reality marriage never fits Prince. Mayte admits that she couldn't get him out of studio. In his last yrs he confessed on 'Way Back Home' that he "Never wanted a typical life...", but accepts his mission to deepens his vision, testify of Lovesymbol & a Future where we will all sing that One song. I will bow down before 'Emancipation' anytime i see it, cuz its a true feat of a rather guarded individual on three discs, but it just found him on a road between the adornment of a civil vs spiritual marriage. He struggled to arrange his ideas but drops some jewels, regardless.

Having a bit of a 'moment' again with this album. I'm really drawn to the more dancefloor-oriented stuff (Joint 2 Joint, Style, Human Body, Da Da Da etc). But then, for others, it's all about the earnest balladry on disc two... such is the beauty of this project.

I've only recently got into Prince's music properly, and this album might be one of my favourites. I love the dreamy R&B feel of a lot of it. It sounds like an album that he was pretty determined to make a smash (unsurprisingly).

Find it weird when Johnny-come-lately Prince fans/listeners more-or-less scold me for being objective or disliking a song/album... where were some of y'all two or three years ago?!

"Prince overdoes the falsetto." his early albums were almost completely in falsetto tho

His early albums didn't have 36 tracks and he got away with it because of the material.

Completely agree about the production - it's plasticy. Some of the arrangements are a bit off as well - the snares on Jam Of The Year for instance - and Prince overdoes the falsetto. Quality control was definitely an issue here... The fact that Prince was still a great idea man at this point is what makes the album worth the effort...

It's actually pretty awesome and I don't mind its length. For me it's one of its strongest selling points even, it's an album that you really can get lost into. The only thing that bugs me about it is the production. It sounded a bit tacky then... and almost 20 years later it sounds even tackier.

Now I'm familiar all 36 tracks and what can I say - almost all of them are good, some of them are great. Every CD has it's advantages, althrough the third is not quite on the level of the rest. But don't worry - this is STUNNING release! Check it out 4 yourself and B amazed :-)

I'd recommend anyone get this album purely for The Love We Make. It's a incredible track.

Okay, I'll go second. This album is weak as hell, probably his worst album if Crystal Ball weren't 4 CDs long. Guess once he split from Warner he got Protection From Editors...
