Biography
Raúl Marrero (Raúl Esteban Marrero Quiles, Villalba, Puerto Rico, 15 November 1926 - 18 October 2018) was a Puerto Rican salsa singer and songwriter.
A native of the town of Villalba, he spent his adolescence in the town of Caguas next to his mother. From a very young age, this boricua showed his interest in music, which is not strange considering that he grew up listening to the compositions of the Trio Matamoros and the Mayari Quartet.
When he was only ten years old, Raúl Marrero appeared in an amateur program where he sang the song "Sin Motivos". A little later he participated in another amateur program in the town of Caguas, where he won first place.
His musical career began when he traveled to New York at the age of seventeen. One year later, at his eighteenth, Raúl Marrero recorded his first album with the trio Los Continentales in the old vinyl record format of 78 revolutions per minute.
He was in Los Angeles and toured Mexico, where he stayed for several years. When he returned to New York, he consolidated as a composer writing his own songs. Marrero began performing at the Big Apple Night Clubs and appearing on television shows.
According to his own testimony, Raúl Marrero began making boleros - it was the music of the time -, and made a considerable amount of compositions in this rhythm.
Raúl Marrero recorded his first full length album with his own compositions in 1965. It was called "No blood in the veins", and included his first hit: the song "Sabrás". At the end of the sixties, with the emergence and flourishing of the Salsa, Raúl Marrero began to compose his songs, bearing in mind the influence of our Maximum Expression, and the salsero movement benefited enormously with his creative talent.
The orchestra of Charlie Palmieri, with the voice of Vitin Aviles, recorded his songs "La Vecina" and "La Hija de Lola". Ismael Rivera sang the song "Increíble". The orchestra of Tommy Olivencia recorded "First I was Me", "As It Does" and "I'm Studying, with the voice of Frankie Ruiz. The same Marrero, showing his double talent, has recorded several albums among which stand out "Apartment Number Two", "The House", "Who Said Fear", "Via
New York The Maletica "and" The Lord of the Salsa ".
