i think it's a bit more complicated than that. it's clear he's still really young and naive in the song, unsure of his feelings. maggie being a lot older and experienced is manipulating him into staying with her just because she doesn't want to be alone at her age, and he perceives it as love. i think its just a case of young love with a power imbalance.

Ich hab eine Kasette von rod gehabt The best of (doppelkasette) ,die hab ich dann mit 13 im Bus von Istanbul nach marmaris gehört.Schöne Zeiten.Natürlichhab ich eifrig mitgesungen,zum schuss haben wir beschlossen sie doch lieber über Lautsprecher zu hören und somit kannte dann jeder türkische busreisende Rod Steward.!% stunden lang :-D
