Biography
Singer-songwriter Ruba Saqr’s work has been internationally recognised by winning The UNESCO Prize for Best Innovative Performance Bridging Traditional and Contemporary Traditions in 2007 (for performing 3 of her originals "Sadaqa", "Ana Qindeel" & "Fil Thalam" at the Samarqand Int'l Music Festival).
She also won UK-based Global Battle of the Bands/Jordan competition in 2005, which led to a UK appearance at the Astoria. Mid 2007, she took part in UK-sponsored Music Matbakh under the music leadership of English producer Justin Adams, Robert Plant’s guitarist and producer of Malian desert blues band Tinariwen (She toured the UK & 5 Arab countries with the project). Ruba’s family, from her mother’s side, comprises a lineage of Sufi teachers… this has had influence on her introduction of elements of Sufism, Arabic soul & blues into her singing. Ruba Saqr was recently described by Justin Adams as “the Jordanian Joan Baez." She will be releasing her debut album in 2008.
