Rufus T. Firefly is an alternative rock band from Aranjuez (Madrid), currently composed of Víctor Cabezuelo (vocals and guitar), Julia Martín-Maestro (drums and programming), Carlos Campos (guitar), Juan Feo (percussion) Miguel de Lucas (bass) and Manola (keyboards). The group was formed in February 2006 and takes its name from the character played by Groucho Marx in the Marx Brothers film Duck Soup (1933).
Rufus T. Firefly was formed in 2006 and that year made it to the Madrid final of the Global Battle of the Bands competition. After that inspiring debut, they produced, Invisible, a demo consisting of four songs sung in English.
In 2008 they recorded their first full-length work, My Synthetic Heart, a self-produced album whose eleven songs took the young band to the finals of underground compilation competitions.
The band returned in February 2011 after a year of silence and the shift to Spanish lyrics with an EP called The Secret History of Our Planned Obsolescence. Also self-produced, this second work was recorded at El Lado Izquierdo studios, under the direction of Dany Richter (Russian Red , Christina Rosenvinge) and Manuel Cabezalí (Havalina), which meant a notable improvement in the sound.
Ø is the third studio album (second full-length). This time the album was released by the record label Lago Naranja Records. Repeating the success of working on El Lado Izquierdo with Dany Richter and Manuel Cabezalí, the album was recorded in May and released in September 2012. Examples of its reach and impact are the fact that it was the twelfth album in the annual ranking of national albums for Mondosonoro, or that it was played for months throughout the programming of Radio 3, and on other national stations.
In 2013, with the help of the "Girando Por Salas" initiative, the band released an LP of rarities and experiments entitled Grunge. was by Leader Víctor Cabezuelo described this work as "the most important album we've ever made." It was recorded and mixed entirely in the band's rehearsal room, with a two-channel sound card, a Shure SM58 and a Shure SM57. The album went unnoticed in the media but represented a learning process and an expansion of the band's sound that undoubtedly set the tone for their future work.
In 2014 they released their fourth studio album, Nueve, which marked a turning point and definitively confirmed the group's success at a national level. During 2015, they went from playing in small venues to supporting Vetusta Morla on their "La Deriva" tour and performing at some of the country's most important festivals. The tour culminated with a sold-out Sala Ocho y Medio in Madrid.
In January 2017, the band's fifth LP, Magnolia , was released . This album is a hymn to love and nature from a new harmonic and rhythmic maturity. The album was recorded by Dany Richter at El Lado Izquierdo and by Víctor Cabezuelo at El Lago Naranja. Mixed by Manuel Cabezalí (Havalina) and mastered by Hay Zeelen. A work that had a tremendous reception from critics and the public. It was named one of the best albums of the year in numerous national and international media outlets, and even became a finalist for the Ruido Awards , which was ultimately won by the artist Rosalía.
In April 2018 they released a new song with Viva Suecia , the result of the radio program Hoy empieza todo.
On May 12, 2018, as part of the Sound Isidro concert series , they performed a single concert with Havalina, performing songs from both bands together, swapping members, and even performing Havalina-esque or Rufustfirefly-esque songs. The single concert was named Bandada.
In June 2018, the band released their sixth LP, Loto, presented as the second part of Magnolia and the closing of a period clearly marked by psychedelia and rock of the 60s and 70s. This work was also very well received by the media, repeating in many specialized lists of "The best of the year" and a new nomination for best album of the year at the Ruido Awards.
In 2021, their seventh studio album, El largo mañana, was released, featuring Manola on keyboards and vocals and Juan Feo on percussion. Their signature sound is infused with influences from 1970s neo soul. Names like Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, and Isaac Hayes are mentioned in numerous interviews. The album was produced by Manuel Cabezalí, recorded by Dany Richter, and mixed by Kennie Takahashi. The album again garnered rave reviews and was presented on an extensive tour of venues across the country. A special edition was released in 2023 that included two bonus songs, collaborations with Rafa Val ( Viva Suecia ), Anni B Sweet and Club del Río.
in January 2024, the band released Reverso, a song in collaboration with the Prado Museum in Madrid, which served as the soundtrack for the "Reversos" exhibition, which showcased the hidden side of some of the museum's most iconic works.
In 2025, the band announced that they were working on their eighth album, and would proceed its release with a series of concerts in unique venues using a unique system for listening to them through wireless headphones. Todas las cosas buenas was released on April 25.
