Schlong was the brain child of brothers Dave Mello (drummer, of Operation Ivy and Downfall fame) and Pat Mello (bass, now of Uncus), along with guitarist Gavin McAuthur (now of Smuteye), three incredibly schooled musicians. They are probably most known for re-doing the entire West Side Story soundtrack as Punk Side Story, but they also redid Fleetwood Mac's Rumours as Tumours – all squeezed onto a 7" record – and since reissued on Unessential Schlong.
Formed in 1989, named after their favorite cat (!), Schlong came to life in a west Oakland, CA warehouse, named the Zen Den. Schlong played their first show at a friend's apartment for his birthday party in Albany, CA.
Style-wise, Schlong played the most complex, interstellar, jazz/prog/space jams with time signatures that'd make Rick Wakeman cry. But lyrically, most songs were about hippos, boogers, jock itch, or fleas. Their albums include: Limp (1991, 7"), Waxy Yellow Buildup (1992, LP), Squattin' On The Pot (1993, LP), The Essential Schlong (1993, compilation), Pooploops (1994, 7"), Tumours (1995, 7"),Unessential Schlong (1995, compilation), Punk Side Story (1995, LP), and their final album Fish Booty (1996, LP). They also release several split records (i.e., releases with another band). The majority of their releases were put out by Very Small Records and Bun Length Records, though Punk Side Story was put out by Hopeless Records.
In 2004, after nearly a decade, Schlong got back together and played a reunion tour throughout California.
