Biography
Skomplazi are Vukani & Zolani, who grew up in Claremont, Durban in an informal settlement called Skomplazi. In 1995 they hooked up with Saziso Hlongwane who suggested they form a dance group called Durban Mix. They worked together until 1997.
Vukani - Began as a freelance dancer in shows as early as 1993. In 1994 he formed a group called Dollars- a pantsula dancing group. In the same year Vukani met Zolani & Smatsatsa at a Miss Valentine show and formed a group called Superstars Pantsulas. Late in 1994 the group went to dance at a venue called Sub Five where they discovered the talented Msawawa & recruited him to join their group.
In 1997 they formed the original group call Superstars composed of Vukani, Zolani, Smatsatsa, Lynett, Mambosh and Msawawa. Vukani at this time was a freelance dancer for Tokolo aka Magesh when he was performing his new album Igusheshe.
Superstar was dancing as a group around Durban in the nightclubs and at functions. Later in 1999 they danced in a show at Natal Technikon where they met Mzambiya. In the same show there was a promoter who had a deal for the New Years parade and needed artists to perform there. From this gig they earned enough money to come to Johannesburg in 2000.
Not knowing anyone in Jozi they found a place to stay in Hillbrow. They started dancing in nightclubs in the Hillbrow area to make some money. Mzambiya was to perform in a nightclub, Red Lion, in Hillbrow that is where Vukani saw an opportunity to dance as an opening act for him.
It was at this time that Mzambiya`s producer asked them to dance for him in the Rand Easter Show. From there the deal was made for them to dance on a regular basis for Mzambiya. While dancing for him, his recording company saw the talent exuded by Msawawa and he was subsequently offered a record deal. Vukani was instrumental in the choreography of the group.
Because of pressure from parents of some members of the group, a few of them had to return to Durban. Vukani, Zolani & Msawawa were the only ones left. When Msawawa's solo project turned out to be a success, the group decided to look for a singing deal.
In 2001 Vukani & Zolani landed a deal to choreograph for one of the biggest artist in the history of kwaito music, Zola. Vukani started choreographing for Zola and Zolani focused on his schooling. After a long time of dancing for Zola both dancers were oozing with talent that was evident to the company, Ghetto Ruff. They decided to give them a go & record them as a duo. They were searching for an opportunity that would ensure they stay together as a creative group.
Their debut CD S`KHABA MABHODLELA is released under the Ghetto Ruff record label and even features Zola on a track called Imali Impande Yesono. The title track S`khaba Mabhodlela has been receiving much playtime in Kwa-Zulu Natal and the South Coast. The video of the title track has received play on SABC 1s Simunye Grooves.
