Flawed but still awesome. It's Slayer after all. The title track, Silent Scream, Mandatory Suicide, Ghosts of War, and my fave... Spill The Blood!! The Priest cover and Cleanse The Soul are duds though.

Nothing to complain about the production, I like it just as it is. This is my favorite Slayer record, on par with Show no Mercy and Hell Awaits. Lombardo's drumming is fantastic here, as some already pointed it out.

A couple of these songs made it into Doom 1993. (Behind the Crooked Cross and the Drum track from South Of Heaven)

Whoever made the initial comment deleted it, but if he was calling South of Heaven Slayer's most overrated, as I assume he was, he betrays his lack of knowledge of the situation, because this was a very divisive album at the time of its release. I'd say most people now agree it's a good album, but I think it actually remains on the whole a tad underrated because it's rarely talked about as Slayer's best album and I think there's a definite strong case to be made that it is just that (I personally prefer Hell Awaits, but this is probably #2 or #3).

Iconic, awesome Metal record. Great change of pace after Reign in Blood. They were smart enough to realize that changing things up a bit after that record would keep things fresh and keep them from being one of those bands who keeps making the same album, and the change of pace worked brilliantly.

Some of Slayer's finest, most sinister riffs and songs on this one. Not as sure about the production, though. It's not bad at all, but it's a bit tame compared to their early and later stuff. I wish this had the exact same production as Reign In Blood or Seasons. That distortion would so be cool to these tunes, I believe.
