Sonny was really on fire at this point. He made more great records in '56-'57 than most artists could make in five lifetimes. There are a couple others he turned out that I think are a little better than Saxophone Colossus, but this is rightly held to be a classic. His band was so fucking choice in these years, too.

From that early era, I like the "Plus 4" record (where he's joined by rest of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach band he was a member of at the time) and Newk's Time (quartet session featuring Wynton Kelly and Philly Joe Jones, with the latter doing some of the best drumming of all time esp. on "Asiatic Raes") a bit more

What a fantastic album! Sonny Rollins is such a legend. He was making better music in 1956 than Miles Davis was.

great album, superb playing but this recording is definitely not the '56 version as shown with Flanagan on piano. Did they have electronic pianos back in those days?
