Anyone who reads Doughty's book, then hears Doughty's latest projects. The guy is a genius. And yet this is the pinnacle of four amazing artists. My fav band of all time

See people asking for similar bands so I'll just name what comes to mind for me. The closest you'll get among their contemporaries is Cake (you probably know them already for "The Distance" and "Short Skirt/Long Jacket"), although they don't have the jazz vibe SC often does. Aesop Rock is a rapper, but he sounds like the logical extension of what SC were doing into the hip-hop world. Not as directly jazz-influenced, but the nasally vocals, smart and often fast-paced lyrics, and some of his sample choices definitely echo them. I'd also say that Doughty's vocals recall Craig Finn from the Hold Steady and Lifter Puller, although the sound pretty different.

Can't still fucking believe it that I discovered this band only in 2020. Totally in love with them.

for me, they've always been underrated, why didn't more people feel how good they were?

The fucking nostalgia this band makes me feel is absolutely unbearable. Still love them, though.

One of my personal top 5 favorite bands of all time. Such an iconic sound that I can not get enough of. If anyone has a band they can name with this sound please let me know, those similar artists are not so similar really.

I've been on the hunt for years. The similar artists delima is such a nuisance because data driven recommendations for stuff in "90s alternative rock" are just going to be completely schizophrenic. If it helps, you should check out Mark De Gli Antoni's "Horse Tricks" (Mark was the sample artist in the band - this album is *very* SC) as well as some of Mitchell Froom's work (a producer, good friends with Tchad Blake, Ruby Froom's father - after whom Ruby Vroom is named).

seriously, that band was the shit. it was the band' whole mindset and their circumstances that made them so unique, i think. i like a lot of doughty's solo stuff aswell though. it's so great mike is cool with playing SC tunes again, considering the bands' breakup and animosities. My favs are casiotone nation and the early version of "the incumbent".

shame these guys only released three albums, they've got so many non-album tracks floating around they could've easily compiled them into at least two more albums

https://pastebin.com/xX0kcZ84 - here's a list of track titles in my unsorted b-sides folder, alongside some links i've had bookmarked relating to more obscure tracks; it's unorganized to all buggery, so you'll have to do some navigation on your own (forgive me padre)

I really love Soul Coughing. Mike's more recent stuff is good, but it just gets me itching for more Soul Coughing. Anyone have some recommendations for similar 90s alt rock/jazzy stuff like this? This is one of the only times Last.fm's similar artists tab has failed me. If you have anything to share, leave me a shout or private message. I appreciate it. :)

Hey cool, Mike is gonna re-record/re-imagine some Soul Coughing tunes - if he gets enough money pledged to the project. Go! Go now! http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/mikedoughty
