I heard that Doughty once was trippin' balls as he happened to be visiting Chicago at the time. According to the people he went with, he was laughing his ass off while walking, pointing at everything saying "Is Chicago!" and then pointing at himself saying "Is not Chicago!". I don't know if it's real but I think about it nearly every time I listen to this gem.

I heard that too. One time in 2001 or so I did the same thing but it was about the Denny's I was at. It was in honour of Mr. Doughty who Is not Denny's.

My memory is foggy but I read the soul coughing message board back then. But it could have also been something one of them said at a show. I saw Soul Coughing a few times before they broke up. And then Mike solo after that. I remember hanging out with his drummer a bit before a show also. If you figure out a better answer I'd love to know for sure. I wish I had a better memory!

Oh Lord I wish I were you. I'll try to do some research about it. Are you going to see them live again in the Reunion tour? I swear to God I'd ask Mike myself if I had the chance as well. Seems pretty chillier than before when it comes to that stuff..

I really want to... but I'm not sure I'll be able to. :( And I also just miss seeing them in small clubs. The reunion tour is going to be at a big place and it's just not the same. Gone are the days of just hanging around outside the venue after shows and just talking to the artists. I was almost always the last one to leave whenever I went to concerts. Now when I go security just rushes everyone out right after the band is on the bus (I assume). And it's just not as fun. And the price is about double what that venue usually charges for tickets.

Not my favorite from them, but it still rocks. Awesome, weird band. I love and miss them.

The "Chrysler Bldg" lyric refers to an actual incident soon after the end of WWII where a pilot crashed an airplane into the Empire State Building (http://www.esbnyc.com/tourism/tourism_facts_esbnews_mar1996.cfm). I assume they used Chrysler Building because it scanned better, or didn't check the reference (remember, this song was written pre-Google.)

Ruby Vroom, for most, usually brings to mind Screenwriter's Blues or Sugar Free Jazz. For me, my first thought is Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago. This song rocks, and has been near the top of my list for years. But I can't help but love the visual imagery from the story behind the song. Picture M. Doughty wandering down Michigan Avenue on the Magnificent Mile, tripping on acid, running up to thi
